Cycle to Work program makes you pay as you earn
On the one hand, the Cycle to Work program is a great way to reduce the price of a new bike and/or cycling equipment by up to 42%. The Cycle to Work program is available to everyone who earns a salary through PAYE (Pay As You Go). Please note: Wage sacrifice deductions must not bring your total wages below the national minimum wage, which may affect the amount you can spend throughout your working cycle.
On the other hand, if you are a PAYE employee in the UK, the Cycle to Work scheme is the most cost effective way to get a new bike and/or cycling equipment.Cycle to Work is a salary sacrifice scheme. You can save on the cost of your bike and/or cycling equipment because the money is deducted from your salary before tax and National Insurance deductions. The cost is spread over 12 to 18 months and depending on your tax bracket you will save between 32% and 42%. The limit on how much you can spend on Cycle to Work is set by your employer. The amount you earn may also affect the amount you can spend through the program because the Wage Sacrifice Program does not allow your total wages to be reduced below the national minimum wage.
Clean your bike and boost your morale!
Many people would agree that riding a dirty bike is bad for morale. Not only does it look nasty and make riding your bike more difficult, all that dirt and grime also wears and rusts your valuable parts. Fortunately, keeping your bike clean and in good working order is very easy with the right techniques and equipment. Just don't forget your toothbrush. You will need a bucket, hose (optional), sponge/cloth/brush, toothbrush, dry rag, bike cleaner, degreaser, chain lube and protective spray.
From the start, you will need to remove the worst of the mud and debris, especially if you are a dirty mountain biker. Then use a hose or a bucket of water and a brush to remove the worst of the dirt. If you use a hose, keep the pressure low, as the strong stream of water can flush grease from seals and bearings. Jet cleaning is a big no-no, as the pressure may spray out this vital grease.
Once your bike is wet and clean enough to actually identify the individual parts, spray it with bike cleaner, from the top of the bike to the ground. Let it soak in and penetrate the dirt for a minute or two. Use a brush or sponge to scrub your bike, again working from the top. This means you'll want to work on the cleanest parts first, then work on the next really dirty parts: wheels, tires and drivetrain. Give it a good rinse with a bucket of water or a hose and again work your way down from the top. After removing the worst of the grime with bike cleaner, remove the chain from the flywheel and cassette, then spray the rear flywheel, front cassette and chain with a good quality degreaser. Let it do its thing for a few minutes.
You can buy fine toothbrushes for flossing between the teeth of your bike's gears and sprockets, but old toothbrushes will work too. To really clean the chain thoroughly, if it has quick release links, you can remove it from the bike completely. Fill an old bike bottle with degreaser, put it in the chain and give it a shake, then rinse it thoroughly. If you use a chain cleaner, you can also clean the chain well while leaving it on the bike by filling it with degreaser and running the chain through it according to the instructions. Let your bike dry thoroughly, or use a dry rag or chamois to remove water. If you remove the chain to get it clean, put it back on.
Also, you will need to carefully apply a bicycle-specific lubricant to the chain. Wrap the pedals backwards and run the bottle along the chain to obtain even coverage. Wipe off the excess with a dry rag.
Finally, the bike polishing spray will make your frame shine. It will also help keep it cleaner for longer by stopping the mud from sticking. Take care to avoid brakes, especially disc brakes, when spraying as it will prevent them from working properly.
