Dutch post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh battled for years to capture the colors, beauty, and motion he saw in his head on painting during his brief and turbulent life. Van Gogh, as the world is now aware, experienced his most prolific period of artistic output during the last two years of his life, when he relocated to Southern France and occasionally produced a new painting every day. Van Gogh only had one painting sold before he passed away in 1890 at the age of 37, but today he is the most well-known artist in the world, and several of his works have each fetched more than $100 million. Van Gogh hurriedly attempted to represent on canvas with his jagged brush strokes and heavy dabs of contrasting oil paints the swirling cosmos, wind-blown tree flowers, waving wheat fields, and scudding clouds. Several paintings are electronically animated to show these phenomena. The display, which was produced in 2020 by Mathieu St-Arnaud and his group at Montreal's Normal Studio, has 500,000 square feet of graphic projections and 60,000 frames of film. A recorded symphonic score for it also included an instrumental rendition of Don McLean's tribute to the painter, "Vincent," from 1971. There are three rooms where the display is located. A walk-through portion of written panels that describe the late 19th-century art scene in Europe, Van Gogh's life, and his close relationships with his brother Theo—a Parisian art dealer who helped Vincent financially throughout his adult years—comes first. Snippets from the thousands of letters the brothers wrote each other are featured in many of the panels, along with Van Gogh's frantic attempt to communicate his emotions via art. Tree limbs expand from across floor and walls, petals blow across them, stars shimmer and swirl, flowers emerge from their canvases, and paint drips from the ceiling all thanks to motion. Most visitors, according to Curtat, spend approximately an hour at the exhibition, but reading every panel and watching the 35-minute film twice will give you a far better understanding of the man and his work.
